A team of young British surfers are experiencing surfing some of the biggest waves of their careers so far during special training in Hawaii

14/11/2008:// Tassy Swallow, from St Ives, Newquay's Josh Piper, Aaron Reid and George Mason along with Beth Mason have been working hard on their surfing technique on Oahu's North Shore
The squad are being coached by Joel Gray and Contantine Bay's Martin Connolly, from Sur Solutions and are surfing as many breaks as possible.
“We’ve had some solid sessions at Off the Wall, Haleiwa, Sunset and even managed to sneak a few in at Pipe to go with the regular Rocky Point sessions. The young surfers are now well settled in and ready to fire it up and push it to their limits in the final week” said Martin.
The trip has not been without it’s events and the Lifesystems first aid kit has been used a few times for cuts and grazes from the lava rock reefs.
Beth Mason took a trip to the medical centre and returned with 5 stiches due to a fin to the leg coming out of a barrel.
The waves have also been taking their toll on equipement with a number of leashes and dings to go along the four snapped boards.
“Getting to grips with how heavy the waves are and the whole North Shore scene is one of the over-riding aims of this project”, said Joel Gray. “If they are to make it as professionals they will be coming back again and again in the future. And if they can learn about the place and get comfortable now, then so much the better.
"The waves have been non stop and the daily routine of two or three surfs a day has obvious benefit. Each athlete also has individual goals that we are working on alongside the broad benefits that they will leave with,” he added.
As well as surfing, the Surf Solutions crew have been taking in a number of fitness and core strength work and even joining in with yoga classes at the Turtle Bay resort.
Chill out time has been provided with trips to the malls, cinema and longboarding in Waikiki.
They also managed to catch the final rounds of the XCEL Pro which was completed in perfect conditions at the famed break and won by local hero Pancho Sullivan.
Each athlete has their own goals and aims for the trip and with a week to go and a couple of large swells on the horizon they are all keen to put as much as possible into the finale.
