More than 150 future surf stars shone at the Animal Cornish Schools Surf Championship in Newquay
by George Mojo
14/11/2008:// For the sixth year running the event had solid surf at Tolcarne Beach providing the perfect conditions for the competitors to showcase their skills.
The early heats saw 3ft clean waves rolling into Newquay bay.
Early standout performances included Treviglas' Ben Bennett in the under 16s, with the Constantine surfer beginning to make an impact on the competition scene.
Ben's casual mature style combined with the ability to bust out big airs will surely see him become one of the up and coming UK junior surfers.
However Ben's hot form wasn't quite enough in a closely fought semi-final, meaning the honour went instead to Leon Mansfield who distinguished himself from the other finalists by his commitment to big manoeuvres in critical sections of the wave.
Closely behind Leon was Tom Good, another Tretherras surfer who has become a standout of junior UK surfing.
In the U14 final Jobe Harris from Budehaven proved that his win at the regional Schools Sports Partnership event was no fluke as he went all the way to take the crown ahead of Luke Dillon.
In the Bodyboard event, Roseland's Steven Hall displayed the sort of form that had him crowned British Bodyboard champion recently.
The standard of female surfing in this country has risen yet again demonstrated by the performances - Jaide Rowe from Tretherras outpointed her fellow finalists with a promising style and one to look out for in the future!
Katie O'Neill, marketing coordinator said, 'The Animal Surf Academy has been set up as proof of our commitment to UK surfing. Getting behind events like the Cornish Schools Surf Championships is a great way of making sure we can spot up the future UK surf stars on our doorstep, as well as encouraging youngsters to get active and make the most of the local coastline.'
Surf Academy director Ellis Attwell added: 'I am so proud of the students for their tireless commitment in organising this fantastic event that that celebrates surfing across the county. I must also give a massive thanks to the teachers that gave up their freetime, the parents for supporting the event."
