News Willis critical after fatal car accident

[Milton Willis]

Professional big wave surfer Milton Willis has been critically injured following a car accident in San Diego by George Mojo

30/06/2008:// The 51-year-old, well known in California and Hawaii for skills both in surfing and teaching the art of riding giant waves, is being treated in Scipps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

A 24-year-old man, who was also travelling in the car with Willis was killed. He's been named as Bradley Dillahunty, from Laguna Niguel, was a musician.

There are reports in several American newspapers saying that accident investigators believe Willis may allegedly have been driving under the influence of alcohol. Blood tests have been taken and the results are expected soon.

Willis and his twin brother Michael, run a surfing camp in Del Mar, California, and the pair gained the reputation for their big wave surfing skills all over the world. As well as writing a book called Discover the Greatness In You, the brothers give motivational talks and seminars on surfing.

They were born in Las Vegas and raised in Solana Beach, learning how to surf at Fletcher Cove. They graduated from San Dieguito High School in 1974.

Police in California say the crash occurred at just before 2am in the morning on a stretch of road known as the Coast Boulevard.

The car collided with a parked car before hitting a palm tree. It's not thought any other vehicle was involved in the accident.

The local surfing community is said to be shocked by the accident.

The Willis family are asking friends to write a letter or a couple of sentences about how Milton may have positively affected their lives or inspired them
