News Donachie silenced at Bells

[Toby Donachie]

Cornish surfer three points off the mark by George Mojo

11/01/2008:// Cornish surfer Toby Donachie was just three points short of securing a place in the last 48 of the Kustom Jetty Surf Pro Junior in Australia.

The talented St Merryn teenager was among a top-class field of competitors from around the world taking part in the first event of the ASP season at Bells Beach.

Donachie, who is a member of the UK Surf Solutions team, was in great form going into the event having trained in Hawaii ahead of the 2008 starter contest.

The youngster relished the early conditions the venue, which hosts a leg of the the annual senior World Championship Tour series.

In his opening heat, Donachie dominated from the start to win in great style taking out Western Australian Jerome Forest.

Speaking after his heat win, he said: “I absolutely love it here, Bells and Winky Pop are fantastic waves and you can really do big turns on these waves – I never really expected Bells to be so good at this time of the year as I thought it was more a winter wave but it's been incredible!

Things didn't go as planned in round two though, and Donachie had to settle for fourth place in his heat - missing out on a third round spot by just 3.4 points.

The heat was won by Craig Anderson, who completely dominated proceedings with an impressive 15.25 points tally with Josh Johnson-Baxter getting second with 7.65 points. Donachie only managed to put 4.25 points on the board.

The biggest upset though was the elimination of pre-contest favourite and number one seed Julian Wilson from the Sunshine Coast.

Wilson struggled while his opponents found the better waves and racked up a series of strong scores.

Wilson only caught three waves scoring a 3.75 a 0.5 and a 4.0 which left him in last place behind an aggressive and in form Ellis Ericson whose power carve attack gave him the win over Davey Cathels.

Past winners of the Jetty Surf Pro include Mick Fanning, Dean Morrison, Jessi Mylie-Dyer along with last years winners Matt Wilkinson and Pauline Ado from France.

The ASP Pro Junior Series is a prime breeding ground for tomorrow’s champions on the Open ASP world professional circuit.

Tour Manager Glenn Best said all surfers taking part would benefit from the experience:“The Jetty Surf has been an incredible competition for the past decade. It’s a great way to ignite the professional surfing season for 2008 and as we’ve seen in the past few years Bells Beach regularly delivers solid summer swells to bring out the best in these super talents from right around the world.”
