News Playa Hermosa to host Trofeo OP

[Jairo Pérez by Shifi Surf Shots]

Second date of Circuito Nacional de Surf takes place this weekend by Ellen Zoe Golden

09/01/2008:// José Ureña, President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica (FSC), announced today that the second date of the 2007-08 Circuito Nacional de Surf (CNS) will take place this weekend, January 12-13, in Playa Hermosa. Called Trofeo Op, the 3-star tournament will begin each morning at 7:00 a.m. in front of Hotel Backyard.

Hopefully, we are going to have the same number of surfers, or better in Hermosa that we got in Jaco,” said Ureña, referring to the 180 registered competitors who came to the debut CNS date, the Copa Mango on December 8 and 9. Surfers came there from all over Costa Rica including Limon, Pavones, Nosara, Malpais, Tamarindo, Dominical, and of course, Jaco. The categories which grew the most in numbers were Boys and Mini-Grommets Girls, however, the Open, Women’s, Junior, Junior Women’s, Grommets, Mini-Grommets Boys, Bodyboard, Bodyboard Women’s, Masters, Longboard and Novices were also quite full.

The waves in Hermosa this weekend are expected to be a little bit better,” Ureña added, noting that surfers will need to ride hard to surpass out-of-the-gate leaders in the Open, Nino Myrie (Puerto Viejo); Women’s, Lisbeth Vindas (Jaco); Junior, Jairo Pérez (Jaco); Junior Women’s, Nataly Bernold (Jaco); Boys, Carlos Muñoz (Esterillos); Grommets/Mini-Grommets Boys, Noemor McGonagle (Jaco); Mini-Grommets Girls, Leilani McGonagle (Malpais); Bodyboard, Yefry Gómez (Jaco); Bodyboard, Ebrina Curet (Jaco); Masters, Mauro Sergio Oliveira (Jaco); Longboard, Luis Vindas (Jaco); and Novice, Alonso Peraza (Jaco).

Inscriptions for the Trofeo Op will take place Friday, January 11th at Jass Surf Shop in Jaco, between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Costs are c6000 for Open, Women’s Longboard, Bodyboaders and Masters, and c5,000 for Boys, Juniors, Junior Women’s, Grommets, Mini-Grommets and Novices. Additionally, first-time registrants must pay an annual FSC membership fee of c10,000.

The 2007-08 Circuito Nacional de Surf offers spectators an added visual treat with each contest with the Miss Organic & Nature contest. Each winner receives $100 and a chance to earn the overall title—and $1,000—at the Gran Finals in April. At last month’s Jaco Copa Mango, Alexandra Vasquez won 1st place out of 5 other beautiful representatives, with 2nd place going to Kimberly Bondurant.
