St Ive's surfer picked for Surf Solutions team
by George Mojo
24/12/2007:// The surfing prowess of a St Ive's surfer has been recognised at a Portugeuse training camp.
Tassy Swallow was one of seven girls picked for the Surf Solutions Team sessions on the Algarve.
Swallow's performance was described as "staggering" by the selectors and she was awarded the Queen of The Trip title.
The squad's Portugeuse trip followed training in Hawaii a couple of months ago and is aimed at improving the surfers overall competition performance and fitness.
Cornish team mater Holly Donnolly, from Newquay and the Gul-sponsored Beth Mason were also receiving coaching along with Gwen Spurlock, Zoe Sheath and Jersey's Delia Baker.
At an earlier session, Max Tucker took the King Of the Trip award for the boy's team.
The team, which included Seb Smart, Damien Conway, Ben Sowter, Aaron Reid, Harry Timson, Lewis Clinton and Jack Whitefield, scored qualilty waves along the Portuguese coast.
Head Coach Joel Gray says the sessions rounded off what had been a remarkable year for the squad: “This has been a very successful trip in Lagos.and involved a number of ‘new’ surfers to coaching programme.
“British Surfing has a much wider scope than just Newquay and the South West and one of my main aims is getting the young athletes out of that bubble. With the waves we had and the commitment of the kids I believe that the level and expectation has again been raised for those who attended.
"In particular the girls raised the bar in terms of their technical level and abilities along with some of the big wave surfing that the boys got involved with the previous week,” added Gray.
The squad are planning more overseas training in 2008
