News High-flying Adams takes gold

Glittering display at Gold Rush Big Wave by George Mojo

17/12/2007:// A glittering display which included two aerial massive turns gave Cornwall's Oli Adams the Gold Rush Big Wave title.

The Newquay surfer relished the 6-8ft waves at Fistral Beach to win the second staging of the competition.

Organisers waited to hold the event until the ideal surf conditions came along and a deep low pressure in mid Atlantic brought a pulsing swell that tested all those taking part in Newquay.

Although the waves were not as big as during the inaugural event in 2006, which was won by Jersey's Scott Eastwood, the power of the swell made for near-perfect conditions.

Adams was among some the UK's top surfers attraced to the challenge which has become a regular on the British Isles contest calandar.

"I'm just so stoked to have won," said Adams. "The waves were amazing and it was so much fun out there. It was really great to surf my home break."

The Gold Rush was partly organised by the British Surfing Association whose headquarters overlook the break used for the competition at North Fistral.

"It went exceptionally well to say the least," said organiser Tristrian Perry. "The conditions were good and there was some really awesome surfing showing what our country's competitors can really do given the right opportunity.

"Oli was an obvious standout and credit must go to all that made it to the final in the face of a tough competition. The waves were not as big as last year, but they were better quality," he added.
