Newquay's Russ Winter leaves it late
by George Mojo
23/07/2005:// Cornish pro surfer Russell Winter will make a last-minute decision whether to compete in Britain's richest surf contest.
The 5star World Qualifying Series Rip Curl Pro is being staged at Newquay's Fistral Beach during the first week of August.
Winter, a past winner of the event, is undecided about his commitments as the Japanese leg of the world tour is being staged at the same time.
The thirty-year-old is not currently included in the top 16 seeds list of the Boardmasters but could still be granted a place by the organisers.
The former English champion is currently placed in 16th position on the tour and is keen to requalify for the top flight next season.
Four pro surfers on the elite men's World Championship Tour have confirmed their entry into the Newquay contest
Tom Whittaker, Toby Martin, Victor Ribas and Rip Curl rider Darren O'Rafferty are among the top seeds.
Shane Bevan along with Pancho Sullivan, Jamie O'Brien, Ben Dunn, Brian Toth, Zane Harrison and Kieren Perrow are also among the best of the international field.
British hopes are currently focussed on Exeter-basd Josh Lewin, former Exeter University surf club captain Martin Black and Newquay's Llewellyn Whittaker.
Lewan is in good form having narrowly missed a quarter-final berth at the recet Super Bock Amado Pro in Portugal.
Alongside the men's tournament, the Nokia Women's Pro has attracted half of the WCT stars including Melanie Redman-Carr, Rebecca Woods, Jacqueline Silva, Serena Brooke, Claire Bevilacqua, Laurina McGrath, Heather Clark, Melanie Bartels and Pauline Menczer as well as Marie Pierre Abgrall and Cornwall's Robyn Davies.
Side by side with the surfing, the Vans Summer Session Vert skateboard comp is quickly gaining momentum and riders confirmed at this stage are Renton Millar, Trevor Ward, Jocke Olsson, Terence Bougdour, Jean Postec, Juergen Horrwarth, Jussi Korhonen, Mattias Nylen, Dave Allen, Pete King, Bob Joosten, Andy Scott and Nicky Cornell to name a few, with more expected.
The Freerange Newquay Street Pro, to be held at Newquay's Wooden Waves is also looking good with first prize of a trip to Sri Lanka for two and cash down the ranks.
Elsewhere the Eastpak miniramp will be open to the public except during demos from Eastpak and Vans BMX'ers and Skaters.
There will also be BMX Vert demos from confirmed riders Jon Taylor, and Baz Keep from Vans and Stefan 'OBG' Geisler and Pete Marcelle of Eastpak.
The biggest news for 2005 is the absolute confirmation of The Nokia Unleashed Music Festival. James Blunt and Razorlight headline the two night festival.
