Surfing ace raises awareness of depression and cancer by George Mojo

19/11/2007:// World surfing ace Jake Paterson is feeling "bristly" in the hope of raising awareness about male depression and prostate cancer.

Paterson, who is the World Professional Surfers senior tour representative, has grown a moustache and aims to raise thousands of pounds in sponsorship as part his appeal.

Paterson, a stalwart of the ASP World Championship Tour before his retirement from top-flight competition, decided to support the charity because he's passionate about changing men's attitude to health.

"I'm bringing the Mo because I'm making a stand in the fight against male depression and prostate cancer. Depression effects one in six men, most don't seek help and untreated is a leading risk factor for suicide," he said.

"Last year in Australia alone, 18,700 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 2,900 died of it - equivalent to the number of women who died from breast cancer annually. Men are far less healthy than women with the average life expectency of males is five years less than females.

"For those that have supported Movember in previous they can be very proud of the impact it has had," added Paterson.
