British Number One wins Firewire Expression Session by George Mojo

13/11/2007:// A closely-fought contest saw British number one Russell Winter beat off the competition to win the Firewire Expression Session at the Gul Newquay Open in Cornwall.

The top 10 seeds on the BPSA Tour and two wildcards were invited to compete for a Firewire board worth £500, plus a £300 cheque.

There is a big buzz around the boards, which have just arrived in Europe, and the Pro’s were all stoked to try them out in a competitive situation. Firewire took along a selection of boards, which the pro’s picked from to ride in the heats.

In windy but contestable conditions at Fistral Beach, the judges saw the competitors pull out all the stops to satisfy the judging criteria of ‘Best Wave’.

There were some outstanding performances, notable from Bude's Joss Ash with impressive aerials ad Johnny Fryer, who was flying, and using the boards to power through his turns.

In the end, the undisputed winner was Russell Winter, who blasted three powerful turns on one wave with speed and a smooth style.

Speaking after his victory, Winter said: “I’m stoked to have won, and it’s great to be able to add the board I used in the heat to my quiver. I’m really looking forward to trying it in different conditions, and I’ll definitely be taking it with me to Hawaii.”

Firewire Marketing manager, Catherine James said: “It was great to get the Pros onto the Firewires, and seeing how they all used them to enhance their individual strengths really showed the boards potential.”
