News North Shore coaching for Juniors

Britain's hopefulls get top level training by George Mojo

26/10/2007:// Nine of Britain's future surfing hopefuls are to receive top level coaching in some of the world's most challenging waves.

The Hawaii Project has been organised to give rising surf stars a taste of life at the upper-echeleons of the sport.

St Merryn's Toby Donachie, Dane Hall and Tassy Swallow, from St Ives, along with Josh Piper, from Watergate Bay are part of a squad being put through their paces on north shore of Oahu.

The area boasts some of the planets most reverred and sought after waves with Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Haleiwa seen by many as the ultimate testing ground for both surfing skills and boards.

The training sessions have been organised by Head Coach Joel Gray and assistant coach Martin Connolly, from Constantine Bay.

As well as ongoing in-the-water monitoring, the crew are also getting specific strength and fitness direction from leading strength coach Micheal Pellegrino.

The five other surfers picked for the trip are Stuart Campbell, from Woolacome, Lyndon Wake Alex Baker and Kathleen Spears, from Croyde and Luis Eyre, who lives in Portugal.

For several of the squad it will their second year on the coaching trip to the Hawaiian Islands.

It is crucial that young British surfers are getting surf experience outside of the UK as much as possible if they are to reach the high aspirations that they have. Hawaii acts not only as a great eye opener but also a critical test against conditions and also world level peers," said Gray.

"The programme we are operating is one of intensive technical coaching interspersed with controlled big wave surf exposure.” he added.

The Surf Solutions team will also spend time getting involved in the Hawaii scene and making contacts for the future.

These include getting custom shaped boards from Jeff Bushman, Wade Tokoro and John Carper.

The youngsters are also commited to helping out for a few afternoons with the North Shore Outdoor Circle environmental group.

The party will take in the first contests of the winter season and have a number of sessions lined up with travelling European and international professional surfers.
