Contest to remember an Exeter surfer

20/10/2007:// Organisers are preparing to the stage the 18th holding of a surf contest to remember an Exeter surfer.
The Tedzo Surf Classic is held annually in memory of Jeremy "Tedzo Connett who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in Australia in October, 1988.
Tedzo was the founder of the Underground Surfboard Company, which in it's time made boards for surfers such as Carwyn Williams ,Vic Hole - the Cornish open champion dueing the mid 80's - and Ross White, a past English champion..
Exeter surfers Nigel and Neil Crawford along with Gary Clay also gained contest success on Tedzo's designs.
Underground became an internationally recognised company, Tedzo himself had been mentored by various prolific Australian shapers such as Bruce Smith, Terry Glass, Craig Hughes to name but a few.
On this last fateful mission Down Under Tedzo had been contracted to shape and glass for a well known Gold Coast surfboard manufacturer.
The event is run by the Exeter Surf Club which formed in 1993 initially to take over the organisation and running of the Surf Classic.
The president of the club back then was Benge Bealey. Dennis McCarthy was chairman; Paul Clark, secretary; and Kevin Tuckett, treasurer.
Committee members included Joff Holt, Dave Wotton, Clive and Steve Jones and Clive Pullyblank.
Rob Dixie, Mark Tozer, Jason Smith, Mark Banfield and Jack Fenn have also been involved in the decision making process at the club.
The club headquarters are the Welcome Inn, on the city's Haven Banks where meetings are held every Tuesday evening from the end of August to plan their annual contest.
The contest, held for the past 18 years, is the clubs main activity and attracts in the region of one hundred competitiors.

The competition is mobile and is held where the best surf conditions are on the day.
The spirit of the contest remains the same as it was when the event started.
Joff Holt, from the club, has been involved in the contest from day one and has been instrumental in its continued success: "All are welcome, from longboarders to body boarders and from cadets to veterans. A prize is allocated to the best in each category.
"All surfers are welcome that indudes pro' and "free" surfers as is traditional at this event. Yes it's your chance to surf against 'the names', and with the traditional prizegiving structure all surfers have a chance of reward and recognition," he added.
The contest will be staged on Saturday, October 27th and will be a moble event and held at a beach or reef within a 90-minute drive of Exeter and where the surf iis at its best.
That covers an area of Newquay in the west, Lynmouth in the North and Dorset in the East.
The exact surfing location will be decided at 8am the morning of the contest and competitors are asked to meet at the Sainsbury's car park in Alphington, in Exeter.
