Billabong Champs takes place in Bude

19/10/2007:// Young British surfers are warming up for the 2007 Billabong British Junior Championships taking place this weekend at Widemouth Bay in Bude.
The contest was scheduled to happen in September but due to a lack of surf the contest had to be put on hold. With a decent swell on the surf outlook, conditions look ready to provide the perfect setting for the British Juniors to showcase their skills.
The teams at the British Surfing Association (BSA) and North Cornwall District Council are also putting all the final arrangements in place and preparing themselves for what is expected to be the biggest ever entry.
The championships are used for the selection of the World Junior Surfing Games 2008 team so all juniors are sure to be competing at their best.
Last year saw the largest ever entry with over 160 surfers traveling from all over the country to compete for this major title and, with the continual growth of British competitive surfing, this year the BSA is expecting an even bigger entry.
The event includes 6 divisions including Under 12s, Under 14s, Under 16, Under 18, Under 14 girls and Under 18 girls. Over £1,500 is up for grabs as well as lots of Billabong and Kustom Goodies.
Last year’s winner Tom Butler from Newquay will be back with a mission to regain his title and as his main challenger Reubyn Ash is now too old for the Junior category, the field is wide open for everyone.
Karen Walton, National Director, BSA said, “It was a shame that we had to postpone the event last month but it has worked out well because the surf is set to be perfect this weekend. The Billabong British Juniors is always such a great event and the enthusiasm at last year’s event was just phenomenal.
"This is an important competition because the results will have a heavy bearing on the selection process for the World Junior Surfing Games next year so we look forward to the weekend and seeing everyone compete at their best, in the competitive conditions.”
