by Howard Swanwick
13/10/2007:// The O’Neill British Open Championships is taking place this weekend of 13th and 14th October on Fistral Beach, Newquay and the surf is building to be the best of the year. With the amalgamation of two lows the waves are set to be a clean 4 to 6 foot and will allow the top British surfers to compete at the best of their ability.
Over 150 competitors entered last years event in North Devon and with the perfect conditions organisers and sponsors are expecting the event to be even bigger this year. The entry forms have already been piling in and many more are expected before the contest kicks off at 8.30 am on Saturday morning.
Sam Lamiroy claimed the title in 2003 and 2006 and is certainly hoping to retain his title this year. He commented, “I’ve been putting in a lot of training in preparation for the contest. Being the O’Neill British Champion means a lot to me so I am going to be pulling out all the stops to keep it that way.” Contestants will be pulling off their best maneuvers to snatch the title but also to impress judges who will also be using the contest to select the British Surfing Team for the World Masters Championships in Peru and World Surfing Games in Portugal next year.
Paul Wilkinson, Marketing Manager of O’Neill UK says, "The O’Neill British Open Surf Championships always has such a great atmosphere. We think the change in location will be an exciting move this year and we hope to have even bigger crowds getting involved and cheering all the surfers on. It is set to be a very exciting competition.”
Karen Walton, National Director of the BSA says, “The O’Neill British Open Surf Championships is without a doubt one of the most prestigious events on the annual calendar and we are looking forward to our county’s top talent performing at their best. It is looking like we are going to have the most entrants ever at this year’s event on Fistral Beach and the conditions are looking to be the best of the year. Fistral Beach will therefore provide a fantastic setting for one of the most exciting British competitions this year.”
