News Harris wins Jesus Longboard Classic

[Ashley Braunton]

Cornish longboarder takes title at Polzeath by George Mojo

10/10/2007:// Cornish longboarder Dan Harris was on top of his game to take the Open title at the Jesus Longboard Classic at Polzeath.

Harris, from Porthtowan won the first ever staging of the event with a series of powerful rail to rail turns and classic longboard manoeuvres.

Fellow Cornishman Richard Balding finished in the runners-up spot narrowly edging out Ben Haworth into third with Ashley Braunton, entering his only competition in 2007 taking fourth.

Four divisions were staged in waves ranging from 2 to three foot at the North Cornwall beachbreak.

The event attracted 60 competitors including some of the UK’s top longboarders in each division.

The event was organised and run by Christian Surfers UK. Over 60 volunteers from around the country assisted in the smooth running of the event, and the evening entertainment at ‘Carters’ was supplied by Bristol based band ‘Transition’.

With £1000 up for grabs, and money for all finalists the event was always going to be keenly contested.

In the ladies division Porthtowans Dom Kent took the trophy, ahead of Jules Marlow from North Devon. Rebecca Pepperell from Newquay came third and in a five-lady final Megan Burns pipped Leonie McFarland into fourth.

In the Junior Division ( Under 18 ) current BLU Junior Champion Ben Haworth from Barnstaple was keen to add a further trophy to his season, and he did not let us down by taking the title, in a great final. Callum Clark ( Bridgwater ) was runner-up and Yorkshires Ryan Hammond beat Paul Bird ( Plymouth ) into third place.

The Masters division was a real tightly contested event all the way through with the evergreen Eric Davies from Christchurch adding a further title to his portfolio.’Local hero’ and shaper Frank Mc Williams used his local knowledge to take second, and Callingtons Mark Goodright third. Gary Calladine competing in both the Masters and Open took fourth.

The presentation took place in the newly converted ‘Tubestation’ Church, with its half pipe skate ramps, plasma screens and café. Feedback from the event indicated that the surfers hope the event will continue again in 2008.

Contest Director, Phil Williams, head of Christian Surfers UK says, “We were stoked with the entry to this event, and were amazingly blessed with great surf and weather. The partnership with Tubestation and ‘nineplus’ worked really well, and the volunteers did a brilliant job. We hope to make this an annual event to compliment the BLU tour dates. A big thanks to God for the waves, and for the competitors for entering, and the local surfers for sharing the waves throughout the weekend
