Last minute sponsor for UK Pro Tour
by George Mojo
23/09/2007:// The Welsh leg of the UK Pro Tour has been safeguarded after a last-minute sponsor was secured for the event.
There was doubt over whether the competition would be staged but tour organisers managed to get the backing needed to stage the competition.
The Elusive Welsh Open will take place at Rest Bay, in Porthcawl on October 7th.
It's the fourth leg of the UK Pro Tour and marks the start of the autumn leg of the series.
This will be the seventh year the tour has gone to Wales - the last two years the event has been held at Freshwater Beach in Pembrokeshire.
Prior to that it had been hosted at Langland Bay and Llanglennith Beach.
Organisers say Rest Bay offers a fantastic challenge for the surfers, who at this time of year will see some of the best swell coming in from the Atlantic Ocean.
The event will attract the top surfers from all over the country including some top international competitors.
Current tour leader, Sam Lamiroy will hope to keep his run of form, however last years tour champion Australian Micah Lester, who lives in St Merryn, in Cornwall, will be looking to make his presence felt with a good result.
Returning from injury Newquay's Alan Stokes and Llewellyn Whittaker will both also be looking to progress as far as they can in the contest.
The event will not just be for the men there is also a Women’s division. Dara Penfold who scored two 10 point waves in her last event will be looking to repeat her performance at this contest. However the welsh duo of Beth Mason and Gwen Spurlock will be out to show how good they are.
Dave Reed, Director of the UKPST, says the Welsh Open is an important part of the UK pro tour: ,”I would like to thank Elusive for supporting this event at such a late stage and giving the tour an opportunity to compete at another great beach in Wales.
"There are many talented Welsh surfers who will make the most of home advantage in this competition and I’m sure we will see a few supprises”.
