News Newquay lifts BLU title

[Ben Skinner]

Success despite failure for Skinner by George Mojo

20/09/2007:// Newquay's Ben Skinner eclipsed the opposition to clinch the overall British Longboard Union Open title despite failing to win the last event of the 2007 season.

The World Games silver medallist secured top place on the tour with a second place finish at the Oxbow Sunset Surf at Gwithian Towans.

Skinner, renowned for his progressive and powerful longboard surfing, matched his previous best finish - a second place at event number two in Perranporth - to lift the honours.

In a thrilling final held in 3ft waves at Gwithian it was Adam Griffiths though who outshone Skinner taking first place with his rival failing to overhaul his heat points total by the final hooter.

James Parry finished third in the final ahead of Sennen's England international Sam Bleakley.

The British Longboard Union was started back in 1996 by Robert 'Minnow' Green, from St Agnes.

The BLU brings together some of the best long boarders in the UK to compete over five rounds at various venues. The competitor with the highest points at the end of the season is the winner of their class.

Surfers compete alongside past and present champions from the Nationals and European events in all divisions.

Grace Davies showed her dominance in the women's division winning not only the final event but also the overall women's crown.

Skinner's sister Sophie also gained a podium finish with third place in the final.
Ben Haworth was already assured victory in the junior division going into the Gwithian event but that didn't deter the teenager from giving it his all.

Haworth has dominated the juniors went into the event in great form after securing the title at Watergate Bay with four victories out of four on the tour.

The 18-year-old, who has been surfing since the age of three, has been unstoppable this year in the BLU and ended the season with five straight wins after winning the junior final from Hugo De Frappe.

Prolific Masters title holder Eric Davies secured the crown again this season despite not making the final at Gwithians. Two second places earlier in the tour were enough to finish top of the rankings.

The final was won by Tom Underwood who outpointed Shaun Marlow in an exciting encounter.
