09/09/2007:// WDCS received tremendous support for its campaign for better protection of UK whales and dolphins, when a petition was signed by over 1,000 wildlife enthusiasts during just three days at the British Birdwatching Fair.
Among those calling for the UK government to act to protect whales and dolphins were wildlife TV presenters Nigel Marven, Simon King and Janet Sumner.
WDCS released an expert report at the Birdfair looking into the increasingly serious threats that whales and dolphins in the UK face and making recommendations on what action needs to be taken to protect UK marine wildlife.
WDCS Director of Science, Mark Simmonds said: “The findings from our report clearly show that UK whales and dolphins are inadequately protected, and we are calling on the Government to put measures into place to remedy this before we lose our marine wildlife for good.
“Whales and dolphins are incredible animals, and the amazing support we received for our campaign this weekend highlights just how strongly people feel about protecting our wildlife.”
The petition, which asks the government to progress its plan for a marine bill, will be delivered to Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the autumn.
