Foot injury problems over for English champ

31/08/2007:// Cornish champion Alan Stokes is aiming to be back in competitive action in the next few weeks after injuring a foot while freesurfing.
Stokes picked up a pulled ligament while perfoming a radical manoeuvre in Cornish surf.
The injury ruled the England international out of the Boardmasters, in Newquay, and the Hot Tuna Summer of '69 event in Bude.
But the Newquay surfer is confident of making the final contests in this season's UK Pro Tour - the next leg is the Headworx Welsh Open, at Freshwater West, on September 22 and 23.
Stokes was the tour winner in 2004 and is eager to re-stamp his mark on the British pro tour series.
"I've been out for a few weeks. It happened when I came hard off the top of a wave during a big turn. I felt something go and that was that.
"The injury hasn't stopped me doing anything else, I can skate, walk and do most other things, but when I surf the foot is really painful, although it is on the mend now."
When not competiting, Stokes has been passing on his competition skills at special training camps in Newquay and Polzeath.
"I've been focusing on the Animal sessions and that's been working really, really well. I can't wait to get back into competition myself," said Stokes.
Stokes is just one of a number of South West surfers to have been sidelined this season through injury.
Newquay's Russell Winter is back in action again after nursing an injured knee earlier this summer.
The British number one is currently competing at the 6star World Qualifying Series Buondi Billabong Pro, in Ericeira, Portugal.
Winter is battling hard in his quest to rejoin the top flight WCT tour. The 31-year-old is in 69th place in the WQS rankings and will need a top 20 finish by the end of the season to fulfill his ambition.
Briton Jason Apparicio has also overcome a double injury sustained during one surf session in Bali.
Apparicio dislocated his shoulder twice - the first when trying to land a big air move at the Indonesian beachbreak..
After medical attention, he was able to continue his surfing commitments in Central America.
