Inter Club championship hopes set high
by George Mojo
28/08/2007:// Defending champions Newquay will have home advantage in the defence of their British Inter Club surf title in Cornwall.
In 2006, the Cornish outift lifted the honours by just two points from long-time rivals Croyde, in North Devon.
It was the first time since 1999 Newquay had taken top spot at the prestigious event.
Newquay hadn't entered a team for the previous seven years but Gareth Llewellyn, Joe Moran and James Mitchell showed their competition class alongside team members Josh Knowles, Nathanial Hooton and Warren Llewellyn.
This year, the squad will again be hoping not to drop many points when they paddle out at Fistral Beach, on September the 2nd.
Teams from the Isle of Wight, Cornwall, Wessex and from across Devon will ensure the event is contested a friendly yet highly competitive spirit.
With 10 teams in the heats and 60 surfers in the water, there was a closely fought battle at the top of the board.
Croyde will be the Newquay squad's main rival having been prolific holders of the title in the last two decades.
Karen Walton, National Director of the British Surfing Assocation, says, "The club scene is really taking off in Britain now and more and more people are competing at this level which is obviously a positive move.
"The Interclubs is this is a brilliant, friendly yet very competitive event. Last year there was such a great atmosphere and we'll expect to see the same at Newquay. We can't wait to get going and see which team will lift the trophy this year."
The BSA will also be running the second of their ISA Judging Courses on the 31st August at the BSA offices in Newquay.
The International Surfing Association Judging Courses are £65 per person and will qualify you to judge BSA and ISA events. The courses can be tailored to all levels, from beginners upwards.
