News Lamiroy shines at Summer '69

Bude win ups UK Pro Tour rankings by George Mojo

28/08/2007:// Perranporth's Sam Lamiroy has moved up the UK Pro Tour rankings after winning his first event of the season in Bude.

The former British student champion surfered powerfully in the smallish waves at Widemouth Bay, to outpoint Micah Lester, Toby Atkins and Johnny Fryer.

Newquay's Mark Harris held on to his lead at the top of the tour despite losing in the semi-finals of the Hot Tuna Summer Of '69 event.

It was a satisfying result”, said Lamiroy after his victory. "I'm stoked to still be going strong. I hope I'm out there when I'm 70.”

"I guess they were looking for big turns and hard turns, I had to be on top of my game in the final, if you lose one inch in conditions like this with these guys out there- they'll just take it over, so I'm feeling pretty lucky," he added.

Lester, a former winner of the tour, was pleased with his final appearance: “I am so excited to be back here for yet another year running, the tour is getting better every event location I come to.

"Widemouth Bay is a great mobile location with stunning views and waves to be had. Unfortunately, I didn’t take the waves I needed to win, coming from Australia I find the tides hard to work with and the waves I needed just didn’t seem to come through for me,” he added.

The women’s final was dominated by Australian Dara Penfold who scored a perfect 10 on her last wave to seal victory.

A fantastic performance by Beth Maison earned her the runners up spot ahead of Ireland's Easkey Britton and Croyde's Kathleen Spears.

The Relentless Money Move for the most progressive maneuver went to Newquay's Ollie Adams with an incredible air reverse.

I had a fantastic event and look forward to winning an event tittle on the tour in the future," said Adams.

The u12’s divisions once again saw a mass of entries. A great final was seen with youngster Harry Timson taking the title for yet another year running.

Timson, from Newquay, said: ’m stoked. Ive been having lots of fun and getting some very good results. I couldn’t have expected anything more, so I’m happy and confident for the next event.”

The u16 boys winner Josh Piper proved himself after a close final between Jack Butler, Tom Good, and Alex Baker.

Local Watergate Bay Boy Piper eventually came to the front after an exceptional surf with dropping conditions he pulled through to take the u16’s title.

Gwen Spurlock once again impressed in the U16 girls final with her dominant surfing style hitting her bottom and top turns with force and with style.
