News Surfcult festival is revealed

Two week festival designed to celebrate surfer culture by Howard Swanwick

15/08/2007:// A massive two-week festival designed to celebrate surfer culture is set to make waves in the south Wales seaside town of Porthcawl later this month.

Between 30 August and 14 September 2007, Porthcawl will play host to Surfcult, a festival that features championship surf competitions, live rock, hip-hop, break-beat and dance music from some of Wales’ best new acts, the launch of new films and literature, surfer fashion shows and ethnic craft stalls, multi-sensory arts and culture exhibitions and the return of the famous Surfer’s Ball.

The first week of the festival will focus on outdoor entertainment as events such as the Line Up rock night and Blue Cathedral dance, DJ, hip hop, break-beat and African percussion party take over the Salt Lake car park (next to the funfair). The charitable Tsunami Cup surf competition will also be held in Rest Bay.

The second week will see the entertainment moving indoors as the Grand Pavilion and local schools host a range of events linked to surf culture. These include Seascape, a mind-blowing multi-sensory walk-through experience, and Off The Lip, a surf film and literature event. The festival will also feature the return of the Surfer’s Ball, an 80s-themed party night featuring live music from some of the best, most entertaining bands in Wales.

Says organiser and arts development officer Andre Van Wyk: “Porthcawl has long been known as one of south Wales’ premier surfing locations. Surfcult will celebrate that relationship and promote the area to people throughout the UK and beyond.”
