Stand-alone event this year in North Cornwall
by George Mojo
14/08/2007:// The growth of longboard surfing has led organisers of the annual Jesus Surf Classic to hold a stand-alone event in North Cornwall.
The open event has been running for the past fifteen years and is once again being staged at Croyde Bay in September.
But the longboard section will take place at Polzeath a month later and incorporate Open, Women's and Junior divisions making it separate from the shortboard competition in North Devon.
It will be called the Jesus Longboard Classic.
This surf contest is organised and run by Christian Surfers UK, and this year there is over £2,000 of prize money on offer, between the eight categories, with the open surfing winner receiving £250.
With last year’s event being over subscribed with over 160 entries, contestants are being advised this year to get their entry forms in early.
As before, over 100 Christian Surfers helpers from around the British Isles will be involved in organising the weekend, making it as pleasurable as possible.
There will be a skate park, marquee, BBQ and surf and skate movies shown on the large screen.
There will be a skateboard competition on Saturday and Sunday afternoon in the new and improved skate park built specifically for the event.
The standard of surfing as always will be very high, with travelling Aussie Rhys Olivery winning the event last year, but it is also a great opportunity for those wishing to enter their first competition to get involved.
The Classic has become one of the biggest and longest running surf contests in the UK, and Christian Surfers UK are once again very much looking forward to hosting it at what is one of the best breaks on the North Coast.
The Jesus Surf Classic takes place at Croyde on September 8th and 9th, with the Longboard Classic being run at Polzeath on October 6th and 7th, surf permitting.
