News Watergate club

Chris Thomson starts new club by George Mojo

08/06/2005:// Professional longboarder and coach Chris Thomson is behind the setting up of the Watergate Bay Surf Club in Cornwall.

The Fat Face/Gul team rider is a regular on the contest scene and runs the 121 coaching centre.

The club aims to help and develop up and coming grommets, and build strong surf teams in all division's to compete within the UK and Europe.

It is also setting out to educate visiting surfers at Watergate Bay about general surf etiquette, build a strong web based community website and hold local club contests though out the year.

It is open to everyone, if you surf Watergate Bay twice a day or twice a year.

The club's presence at club contests in the UK and Europe is already looking strong with many top surfers signing up.

Thomson believes the club will be a huge success: "We basically want as many people to get behind this project and help push the club into one of the biggest in Europe. I've spoke to guy's like Steve Daniel who was winning contest's at Watergate Bay in the 70's and he is super keen on getting involved, that's the kind of support the club needs."

Will Eastham, former European Longboard champ and owner of Surfboard's UK added: "It's fantastic to finally have an open surf club within the Watergate Bay area. The level of surfing around Watergate Bay and Newquay is very strong and that should show through in club contests."
