News Surfers take Manhattan

Surfers’ Environmental Alliance first NY race by Howard Swanwick

10/08/2007:// Hey New Yorkers: Imagine looking out your window and seeing world-renowned watermen Gerry Lopez, Joel Tudor, and Darrick Doerner paddling down the Hudson... standing up. On Monday, August 13th, this image will become a reality in order to raise awareness and benefit autistic children. Organized by the Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA), the paddle around the island of Manhattan is an invitation-only, 28-mile paddle that will include between 30-40 participants. Participants will be on stand-up paddleboards and traditional surfboards, paddling the route either individually or as relay teams. All proceeds will benefit Autism Awareness and SEA.

SEA Paddle NYC will help create awareness of our organization’s fight to preserve our coastal waterways, while raising money for a condition that is more prevalent in New Jersey than any other state,” said Andrew Mencinsky, Executive Director of SEA. He continued, “Surfing and being in the ocean has also proven to provide autistic kids a rare sense of calm and tranquility. This event is a win-win for everyone involved.”

SEA Paddle NYC is the brainchild of Mr. Mencinsky and Darrick Doerner, big-wave waterman, founder of dd-sea.com and SEA board member. The event will also feature other world-renowned surfers including Hawaiian legend Gerry Lopez and longboarding icon Joel Tudor, both of whom will be paddling alongside Darrick, Andrew and many other participants. The paddle will begin in the East River off of South Street Seaport at approximately 8:30 AM and continue north, into the Harlem River then down the Hudson River, ending at The North Cove Marina in Battery Park City.

At 7:30 AM, just prior to the paddle start, there will be a 30-minute press conference and photo session at Pier 17. As the paddlers make their way around the island, they will be in full view from the shoreline. The paddle will finish at North Cove Marina at approximately 2 PM, where there will be more opportunities for press coverage and event photos.

For more information regarding sponsorship, donations or other participation in SEA Paddle NYC, contact Andrew Mencinsky at 732-804-4096, Darrick Doerner at 808-637-0077 or visit seapaddlenyc.org.

Took up prone paddling last year as a way to maintain paddling strength for surfing. I paddle in amateur paddling events. Very active in Surfrider's Eastern Long Island chapter. Main focus in Surfrider is to prevent the Army Corps from constructing a seawall around Montauk Point. My father was a Breezy Point lifeguard in the '40s and '50s and told me a story about a fellow guard who swam around Manhattan. The story intrigued me and caused me to research paddling around it. I was luckily connected with SEA.
