News Brits in Boardmasters draw

[Perranporth's British champion Sam Lamiroy]

Winter only UK surfer in top fifty seed by George Mojo

01/08/2007:// Newquay's Russell Winter is the only Briton seeded into the top 50 draw for the Rip Curl Boardmasters.

Many of the world's top surfers are competing in the five star World Qualifying Series event at Newquay's FIstral Beach.

Winter returns to his home break after competing in the US Open in California and is perfectly placed in the world tour rankings to make his mark at the event.

Organisers have ranked the 31-year-old in 20th place for draw behind the likes of former world junior champion Adriano de Souza, from Brazil, Australian Shaun Cansdell and South African Royden Bryson.

Thousands of spectators are expected to attend this year's Boardmasters which has become a regular on the European surfing calendar.

The pre-contest draw shows eight British surfers in the starting line up.

Newquay's WQS tourist and English champion Oli Adams is joined in the round of 192 with Perranporth's British champion Sam Lamiroy.

Neither yet know their opponents as the official heat draw has yet to be released.

Joining the pair in the first round will be Bude's Ruebyn Ash, Newquay's Alan Stokes, Llewellyn Whittaker, Devon's Martin Black and Johnny Fryer, from the Isle Of Man.

The Rip Curl Boardmasters runs from August 6th through to 12th.

Current WQS rankings:
1 Tiago Pires, Portugal, 10,900 points.
2 Jordy Smith, South Africa, 10.375.
3 Jay Thompson, Australia, 10,013.
4 Jihad Khodr, Brazil, 9,563.
