News UK Pro Tour heads for Widemouth

[Mark Egor Harris]

Announcement made for third leg of tour by George Mojo

01/08/2007:// It's been announced the third leg of the UK Pro Surf Tour will be staged at Widemouth Bay, in Cornwall.

Organisers have revealed The Summer of '69 Hot Tuna Pro will become a mobile event in future years and be held at different locations in Britain.

Widemouth has breaks along the entire beach and works best on mid to high tide up to 6 ft.

It is a favourable venue for Tour surfers looking to gain valuable points toward the prestigious year-end UK Championship Title.

Additionally, the event welcomes competitors of all ages and abilities with an assortment of amateur contests for both males and female entrants.

Divisions include Men’s Open, worth £3,000, Women’s Open, worth £500, U’16+U’12 Grommet Comps and the Relentless Money Move, offering £250 for the best move over the entire weekend.

With nearly half the UK Pro Tour complete, the“Summer of ’69” Pro kick-starts a Tour period traditionally marked by increasingly bigger, better waves.

Currently leading the tour is Newquay lad Mark ‘Egor’ Harris, UK Tour Champ in 2003.

Harris is one of the best UK surfers and a popular surfer on tour.

A tour victory by Harris would be a popular one but all the other surfers will be out to stop him, not least Hot Tuna team riders Toby Atkins and Micah Lester.

In addition to surfing, spectators and athletes can expect to enjoy many beach-related activities at this seaside sporting venue and in the surf-stoked town of Bude.

Hot Tuna was born in Australia in the summer of ’69 to serve the demands of sojourning surfers.

Spreading on the backs, bums and boards of watermen through coastal locales in the South Pacific, the brand quickly burgeoned globally, becoming an influential leader in the nascent surf industry and one of the progenitors of the neon era of surf in the '80s.

A long list of notables, in and out of the water, have waved the Hot Tuna banner at one time or another in their careers, from super models to pro surfers such as Richie Lovett, Robbie Page, Beau Emerton and Drew Courtney
