News SAS kick up a stink in Guernsey

[Protestors in St Peter Port]

SAS pressure authorites over decision making by George Mojo

28/06/2007:// A mix of Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) campaigners and Guernsey’s recreational water users descended on Sir Charles Frossard House in Guernsey to ask why the States are delaying their decisions on the future of the island's sewage treatment plans.

SAS stormed the reception area of the St Peter Port building to deliver a tray of fudge to highlight the ‘fudging’ currently being seen on this issue by the States.

SAS say the public Services and Environment Ministers went into hiding but the campaign group were still able to offload the fudge after shouts of ‘we won’t budge till you take our fudge’

Earlier this year, an SAS action reminded Public Services and Environment Departments that in the time that has elapsed in producing the green paper on sewage (January 2006) and our action in January 2007, over 1.5 billion gallons of raw sewage and wastewater had entered Guernsey’s waters through the island’s outfall pipes.

The Green Paper suggested recommendations would be made within the year. A decision would then be made by the States. This has still not happened and SAS are urging the States to make this call.

Richard Hardy, SAS Campaigns Director says, “We have real fears that this issue is quietly being consigned to the scrapheap of indecision making. We need to hear Ministers within Public Services and Environment commit to making recommendations on sewage treatment solutions for the island now. Over 4.5 billion gallons of untreated sewage and wastewater has been discharged from Guernsey since the campaign’s inception and it’s putting a brown mark against the island in comparison to other seaside resorts who are proud to show off their state of the art sewage treatment”.
