[Channel Islands team in Anglet]

Squad progress through their heats by George Mojo

20/06/2007:// In what proved to be a great hour of competition for the Channel Island squad competing in day four of Eurosurf 2007 in France, Shelley MacFarlane in the Ladies open division together with Gordon Blake and Ben Skinner in the Longboards all progressed through their heats.

Forced to re-surf her suspended first round match up from day two, MacFarlane once again dominated despite having an interference called against her which meant the points from the highest of her two scoring waves were reduced by half, MacFarlane still easily progressed in second position behind Garazi Ortun of Spain.

Channel Island success continued in the Longboards. First in the water in front of Podium One was Gordon Blake who once again employed his wave knowledge to find the best waves. He progressed along with Antoine Delepro of France.

In the final heat of the day, Ben Skinner survived an incident packed twenty minutes against Frenchman Jonathan Larcher, Bruno Gandela, from Portugal and England's Adam Griffiths.

As conditions deteriorated at Les Cavaliers, in Anglet, Skinner gambled on taking two early waves. It was also a strategy adopted by Larcher and with the clock ticking down, both the French and Jersey surfers appeared to reached an ‘entente cordiale’ whereby each ensured the Portugese and English riders were challenged for every wave they wished to catch.

The tactics were fair but uncompromising and in the end, Gandela was forced into an interference call against Larcher and Griffiths only managed to catch one wave.

Conditions are set to improve for tomorrow with the swell set to rise in the afternoon and it is expected that all members of the Channel Island squad will compete.
