Tollemanche aims to fight back to fitness
by George Mojo
28/05/2005:// South Devon pro surfer Eugene Tollemache is hoping to return to competition this summer after breaking his neck in an horrific wipeout in South America.
The former English champion, from Totnes, is recovering following surgery in London to fuse together the broken vertebrae.
Tollemache, captain of the UK Resin8/Saltrock team, was injured surfing heavy beachbreak waves in Peru last year.
A one-time chef for Padstow-based Rick Stein, he is setting his sights on competing in this season's British Professional Surf Association Tour although is expected to miss the forthcoming Sri Lanka Air Champion of Champions in Arugam Bay at the end of next month.
Last year Tollemache, who's fearless attitude to big waves has earned him special respect, came down with Dengue Fever after being shipwrecked on an Asian surf safari.
"It's going to be a long painful walk," he told BBC Devon. "as well as the BPSA competition's, I'm aiming on going to ireland on the North Devon Saltrock trip in July, then onto the Hebrides or France in late August ahead of Indonesia in September. But will have to see how things."
