Cornwall hosts home nations challenge
by George Mojo
28/05/2005:// Defending champions England will have to be on top of their game at the 2005 Gotcha Home Nations Challenge in Cornwall.
Last year, England narrowly defeated Wales in Rest Bay when only two teams took part.
Next month, surfers from Guernsey and Jersey, Ireland and Scotland will also feature at the speciality event at Watergate Bay, in Newquay, which showcases the best junior talent in Britain.
South West surfers ensured England captured the inaugural trophy with Newquay's Tom Butler and Jayce Robinson leading the way. Butler's single 8.8 point ride was enough to clinch top spot in the Cadets best wave section. Robinson, from St Ives, won the overall Cadets division
The battle for the prestigious team title this year will be fought out over eight different disciplines, including U14's, U16's, Longboard, Bodyboard for both girls and boys and the fiercely competitive U18's where junior surfers will exhibit their talent before they have to compete at the Open (adult) level.
The contest is aimed at developing the performance of both junior surfers and team selectors of the UK's national surfing teams before they compete on a European and international level.
Even though the Welsh team lost out on home territory in 2004, the event helped team selectors choose their strongest team to travel to The European Championships, in Portugal, where Bethan Mason achieved second place in the girls U18 division.
Contest director and ESF spokesman Paul Jeffery said: "Its always great to see the junior surfing talent of this country showcased so I'm over the moon that Gotcha are supporting this event again, plus we can't wait to see what the Welsh team come at us with this year."
