Young surfers encouraged by North Cornwall District Council by George Mojo

14/05/2007:// Talented young surfers are invited to compete for places on new surf squads being set up by North Cornwall District Council.

A launch event next Sunday (May 20th) will kick start North Cornwall’s new surf development structure.

The launch will see the creation of an elite squad and two development squads.

The event is being hosted by North Cornwall District Council who have teamed up with TIKI wetsuits, Harlyn Surf School and Raven surf school in Bude, to create an all-inclusive development structure for the sport of surfing throughout the district.

A mini competition will be used to talent spot potential future surf stars and to steer them on the path to competitive success and hopefully a professional surf contract.

The competition is open to surfers aged between 11 and 16. There will be eight places on the elite squad and 16 places on each of two development squads – one based at Widemouth bay in the North, with Mike Raven former European champ and in the South with Chris Rea at Harlyn School.

The elite squad will benefit from free high level coaching funded by Sport England along with a generous package of equipment support through TIKI.

TIKI have also offered the opportunity for the most promising surfer from the elite squad to win a two-year professional contract at the end of the training period.

Paul Meadows, NCDC’s Coastal Recreation Officer said: “The development squad surfers will benefit from high level coaching from some of the UK’s top surf coaches as well as equipment support from TIKI and will be first in line should a place on the elite squad become available.

"Surf camps in Europe are part of the structure of the squads and will give our young surfers a fantastic range of experiences and skills to really help them to achieve their full potential as athletes." he added.

The venue for the launch on the 20th is dependent on conditions on the day – it will either be at Harlyn or at Widemouth.
