News Hotdoggers ‘Underdogs’ contest

Surf Club holds event aimed at newbies by Andy Haworth

30/04/2007:// On Sunday April the 29th, the Hotdoggers Longboard Surf Club held the first of 2 events held annually specifically designed for club surfers of average ability or for those new to contest surfing. Called the ‘Underdogs’ the event attracted a large field of club surfers and it was great to see new members having a go such as father and son team Dave and Lewis Parker surfing in their fist ever contest and having a great time in the perfect introductory contest conditions.

Also new to the club was Jake Bowrey who has had shortboard contest experience but this was his first longboard event and he certainly impressed and looks set to be a future top longboarder.

The contest was started in small and windy conditions making it difficult to catch and stay on the waves but by the time the later rounds were run off the tide had turned and Saunton beach produced some classy 2’ peelers.

In the final the best 2 surfers Callum Clarke and Jake Bowrey battled hard for top slot with John Horton and Andy Haworth left to fight for third place. Callum narrowly beat Jake to take his second top placing of the season with Jake promising to compete in other club events and likely to threaten some of the clubs more established top surfers. John Horton took a creditable third leaving Andy Haworth in fourth place.

Visit the Hotdoggers website at http://www.hotdoggers.co.uk/Calendar.html for more information if you’re interested at giving the club contests a go.
