Top-class performance at British Schools' Championships

17/04/2007:// Young surfers put in a top-class performance at the Hunter / Billabong British Schools' Championships in North Devon.
Consistent 4ft clean surf at Woolacombe coupled with 25 degree temperatures meant superb conditions for the annual event.
Despite a brief postponement due to fog, the contest, held by the British Surfing Association along with Calypso, attracted 120 young surfers aged 12 to 18 from 35 schools across the South West, England, Wales and the Channel Islands.
But it was North Devon which led the way right from the beginning, as last year's winners Braunton kept the title of Overall Winner. All four of their surfers made it to their finals.
Cornwall also put forward some strong surfers, with Billy Norways from St Ives successfully defending the Under 18s title and Newquay's Josh Hughes taking first place in the Under 16's. Newquay bodyboarder Charlie Strang won the Under 16's bodyboard title.
Jersey's Will Glenn won first place in the longboard category while fellow islander Bradley Ferguson impressed the judges with his gutsy surfing in the Under 14s.
In the girls category, Gwen Spurlock from Swansea also wowed the panel but it was Braunton's Karma Worthington who took the title. But the closest final in contest was for the Under 18 bodyboard, narrowly snatched from Phil Le Neveu by 15-year-old Bournemouth boarder Nat McCabe.
Karen Walton, national director of the BSA, said: "We've seen some awesome action at Woolacombe this year, with some pretty close wins, which goes to show how exciting this competition can be. We've had an impressive entry from schools across the country, and we are incredibly grateful to the sponsors, teachers and parents who support the youngsters in making this happen."
