News Haworth takes Junior Longboard Honours

North Devon’s own defends junior title by Andy Haworth

16/04/2007:// The first British Longboard Union surf contest of the 2007 season took place on the 14th and 15th of April at Perranporth in Cornwall. Whilst the vast majority of the Country basked in warm sunny summer like weather the South West and Cornwall in particular was blessed with fog, mist, rain and a cool breeze with the odd sunny spell thrown in just to remind the contestants what they were missing. However, what wasn’t missing was a good quality solid swell producing surf in the overhead range on the Saturday and in the waist to head high range on the Sunday.

North Devon’s own Ben Haworth is out to defend his junior title in the BLU tour, which is the most prestigious longboard contest series in the UK.

Ben recently returned from winter training in Morocco and the intensive surfing in good quality waves has definitely produced dividends for the 17 year old who is continuing to show much promise as the UK’s top junior. His strong but stylish approach has particularly improved in bigger waves and consequently Ben cruised comfortably to first place in the junior category at Perranporth. This was also backed up by a valiant effort in the Open category in which Ben was the only junior to make it into the semi finals.

Next weekend sees the second Hotdoggers Longboard Surf Club League event being run on the Sunday at Saunton and Ben hopes to secure a second win to add to his first place won a few weeks ago.
