Place for Scotland's contest up for grabs
by George Mojo
11/04/2007:// A wildcard into Scotland's richest pro surf contest is up grabs at the Scottish Championships in Thurso later this month.
The O'Neill Highland Open has been given a six star rating on the World Qualifying Series tour.
The event, one Britain's richest contests, will attract surfers from all over the world including defending event champion Briton Russell Winter and Newcastle's British champion Sam Lamiroy.
In last year's final, Winter scored a perfect 10 from the judges in a performance which also saw the British number one sneak a a huge stand-up barrel in 4-6ft waves at Brimms Ness.
Winter, who is warming up for the event in France, dominated the final, held in 4-6ft waves at Brimms Ness to defeat Brazilian Bernardo Miranda.
The showdown was long-awaited especially as Winter had put out top Australian Luke Munro by less than a point in the semi's.
The winner of the forthcoming Scottish national title will gain automatic entry into this year's Highland Open which is being staged from April 24th to May 1st.
Thurso is on the very Northern tip of Scotland, projecting into the Atlantic Ocean. The wind and swell from the Atlantic provide some of the world's best surfing conditions, and waves to compete on an International level.
WQS surf events typically have a setting of blue sky and white sand.
To see surfers from all over the world on the Scottish Highlands, the contrast of tanned Brazilian, Hawaiian and Australian surfers against the back-drop of fields of sheep and traditional Scottish castles will provide an interesting and unique event with outstanding imagery.
