30/03/2005:// A double tuberide earned Clinton Fraser victory by the narrowest of margins in the opening British Professional Surf Association event of the season in North Devon.
Fraser's left-hand barrel-fest in solid four-foot waves at Croyde Bay gave him the Saltrock Open title by just 0.2 points from Newquay's Mark Harris.
Fellow finalists Cain Kilcullen and Reubyn Pierce also scored some high scoring rides, but were eventually left in Fraser's wake.
More than 60 top surfers took part in the event which saw a new contest format for 2005 where the winner goes directly into round three and the two runners up get a second chance by advancing to round two.
Day one saw set waves in excess of 8ft and offshore winds creating a tube fest with the wave of the day in the Open division going to Newquay's Llewellyn Whittaker who dropped into a bomb of a wave, tucked into the barrel and got shot out before a huge gouging cutback and a perfect ten score from the judges.
It was decided the surf was too big for the juniors. Joe Moran, competitor and editor of British Surf Mag Pit Pilot, who surfed in one of the last days of the heat said: "It was so heavy out there. Everyone was taking a pounding but the conditions were still amazing. Big big surf in sunny weather, a perfect start to the tour".
Day two kicked off with the pro junior and the usual suspects were shining. Reubyn Ash, Oli Adams and Cain Kilcullen were firing on all cylinders despite surfing in the men's event as well so the question was whether with this much surfing would it be possible for one of the other juniors to step up and challenge the established regime.
Despite some valiant efforts, particularly from Harry Cromwell the final results finished with Harry Cromwell in 4th, Reubyn Ash 3rd, Cain Kilcullen 2nd and the Saltrock Pro Junior Title went to Newquay's Oli Adams, who despite suffering from the flu made the men's quarter finals and took out the juniors.
The FSO Style move award which for the Saltrock Open was best air, went to Reubyn Ash for a big smooth frontside air.
The next stop on the BPSA UK Tour is the Fat Face Night Surf at Lusty Glaze Beach, Newquay from May 13-14th.
