25/03/2005:// South Devon surfer Eugene Tollemache is likely to miss the opening BPSA event of the season in North Devon through injury.
The former English champion suffered severe neck injuries following a wipe-out in heavy beach-break waves during a recent surf trip to South America.
A one-time chef for Padstow-based Rick Stein, the Resin8 team rider has been forced to wear a neck brace until consultants decide the best treatment.
Newquay's defending BPSA men's champion Alan Stokes will feature at the Saltrock Open at Croyde Bay, as will fellow Cornishman and 2002 champion Mark Harris.
Croyde Bay, located 8 miles north-west of Barnstaple, has what many surfers consider one of the best beach breaks in the country, with classic low tide hollow waves.
In previous years this event was held later in the year, however due to increased chance of swell the event has been moved forward in the season.
A BPSA Pro Junior contest will be also be run over the weekend of March 26-27.
Martin Peirce, of Saltrock said, "When the conditions are good the beach break at Croyde has a lot to offer. We're expecting a good entry for this years contest, including most of the Saltrock team, so we're looking forward to a good event".
