News First Longboard Contest of the Season

Contest underway in clean conditions by Andy Haworth

05/04/2007:// The first longboard surf contest of the season kicked off on Sunday at Saunton, North Devon in clean 2 -3’ surf. The Hotdoggers Surf Club contest was a great success attracting over 40 competitors with some new members and first time contest entrants having a crack at the fun event.

This year the club has changed the format of the ‘Second Skin & Errant’ sponsored league by splitting the entry into different divisions rather than one large ‘open’ category. This gives the competitors the opportunity to choose which division is likely to suit them and their ability best and the changes seemed to go down well with club members. The event ran smoothly under the stewardship of contest Director Greg Robinson and under the watchful eye of the Clubs President Norman Wright.

The ‘open’ event was the most hotly contested and a high standard of surfing was seen throughout the rounds. Ben Haworth was on a mission to defend his previous 2 club titles and his 2 months training in Morocco certainly seemed to shine through with Ben pulling off some amazingly smooth and radical manoeuvres. Ben worked through his rounds to take first place in each of his heats eventually winning the final above other open finalists Greg Robinson, Keano and Tim Aylett.

In the ladies Bens sister Kim Haworth took first just pipping first time competitor Hazel Ilett into second place and in the juniors Fergus narrowly beat Calum with the final showing an encouraging and solid base of up and coming junior talent.

The ‘Masters’ event was won convincingly by Adrian Howell with a superb display of powerful surfing.

The clubs next event takes place on Sunday the 1st April for non sponsored surfers followed by the next league contest on the 13th of May. Both events taking place at Saunton Beach starting at 8.30am. Visit the Hotdoggers website at http://www.hotdoggers.co.uk/Calendar.html for more information if you’re interested at giving these contests a go.
