Surfing's most sought-after pieces up for grabs
by George Mojo
27/03/2007:// Some of surfing's most sought-after pieces of history will go under the hammer in Hawaii later this year.
The biennial Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auctions of 2001, 2003 and 2005 return to the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu on Friday, July 20th and Saturday, July 21st - the main auction taking place on Saturday evening.
This time around, the HIVSA will include an antique roadshow-style component, where top appraisers in the surf collector's field will be on hand to appraise individual items brought in by members of the public.
Of those items, slots will be set aside for inclusion as main auction lots.
The auction itself will feature one hundred years of Island influenced vintage surfboards, art, Hawaiiana and surf memorabilia from the turn of the century to the early '80s.
One hundred items for the main auction lots and another 100 items for the silent auction.
As has become a tradition at this event, many of surfing's characters, craftsmen, legends and heroes will partake in a gathering of the surf 'tribe'.
The last HIVSA enjoyed the company of Dick Brewer, Greg Noll, Ben Aipa, Matt Kivlin, Joe Quigg, Joey Cabell, Fred Hemmings, Ricky Grigg, Jock Sutherland, Buffalo Keaulana, Rory Russell, Mike Doyle, and many others.
Starting on April 1st, previews of pieces to be auctioned can be viewed at www.hawaiiansurfauction.com , with new pieces to be added on a weekly basis.
The Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction is currently seeking items that will be offered this year.
Whether it be an old surfboard, trophy, decal, surf magazine, or anything of a surf nature that is 25 years or older, if you would like to have it considered for auction, now is your chance.
