21/03/2005:// An impressive nine-point wave earned Guernsey's Tom Hill the Open title at the BBC Children In Need Surf Classic at the weekend.
The Castel surfer shredded the four foot plus waves at Perelle to take the title narrowly from Matt Le Maitre, Johnny Walbridge and Jacob Warr.
It was superb performance by Hill on the wind-affected left-handers in front of the island.
The shortboard event was moved from Vazon because of an inconsistent swell on the main beach.
Hill looked at home on the left which was offering rides of over 80 metres.
Le Maitre and last year's runner-up Johnny Walbridge pushed hard all the way with a series of tight turns on the slighly choppy wave faces, but they never managed to catch up on Hill's early domination. Both scored eight points waves from the judges.
Walbridge, from St Peter Port, had a few tricks up his sleeve with a classy 360 reverse midway through the final, but never quite managed to find his earlier form.
Rising junior Warr, from St Martin's, had to settle for fourth place despite a couple of solid waves midway through proceedings.
The beaten semi-finalists were Matt Gill, Ben Francis, Simon English and Tom Colly.
Cobo's Nathan Browning put his excellent knowledge of Vazon to good use to win the longboard final.
On the pushing tide, Browning racked up the points on a series of walling righthanders at the west coast beachbreak waves. His two-wave tally of 9.5 points was enough for the honours.
St Saviour's John Le Noury started brightly and at one stage threatened to take the title but was eventually beaten by a few close-outs late on.
Chris Ashwell, from Vazon, swapped his judging hat for a competition rash vest and cruised into third spot ahead of St Peter Port's Lee Morvan, who also featured in the shortboard event.
The beaten longboard semi-finalists were Dave Critchlow and Gary Van Der Linden.
A special prize-giving ceremony was held at Guernsey Yacht Club and more than £1,400 pounds was raised for Children In Need.
Final results:
Open: 1 Tom Hill (Castel). 2 Matt Le Maitre 3 Jacob Warr (St Martins) 4 Johnny Walbridge (St Peter Port)
Longboard: 1 Nathan Browning (Cobo). 2 John Le Noury (St Saviours). 3 Chris Ashwell (Castel). 4 Lee Morvan (St Peter Port).
