Quiksilver donate to North Shore Community Land Trust
by George Mojo
12/03/2007:// One of the world's biggest surfing companies has donated thousands of pounds to safeguard land from development overlooking some of Hawaii's most famous waves.
The Quiksilver Foundation is giving more than £50,000 to the North Shore Community Land Trust (NSCLT), the organisation working to protect the 1,129 acre Pupukea Paumalu coastal bluff on the North Shore of O'ahu.
This donation, along with the company's continued support of the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau and other North Shore community and surfing initiatives, ensures it's role in helping to preserve the history and dignity of the region.
At the same time it emphasises the Foundation's ongoing commitment to benefiting and enhancing the quality of life for communities of boardriders worldwide.
"The North Shore is blessed that the Foundation have consistently supported this special community. We're inspired by their leadership and passion for protecting the environment," said Blake McElheny, of the North Shore Community Land Trust.
"They played an instrumental role in the 'Campaign for Pupukea Paumalu,' along with Campaign Honorary Co-Chair Kelly Slater, and is now helping launch the 'Pupukea Paumalu Stewardship Fund' with the inaugural donation to the fund," he added.
On December 1, 2006, Quiksilver and rock legends Pearl Jam came together at Waimea Valley for a benefit concert to pledge their support for the mission of the NSCLT and to celebrate the opening of the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational.
"Quiksilver has always considered Hawaii one of its many homes," said Quiksilver CEO Bob McKnight. "It is great to be there year after year hosting the Big Wave Invitational, an event that honours one of Hawaii's most important legends while celebrating the beauty and power of Waimea Bay and the North Shore as a whole," said Quiksilver CEO Bob McKnight.
"I am particularly excited that our recent collaboration with Pearl Jam, along with this sizeable donation, has helped the NSCLT move closer to its goal while reminding people, in more general terms, how important it is to respect and preserve the environment in which we work and play," he added.
Additionally, the Foundation is committed to another two worthy North Shore groups: the Punana Leo O Ko'olauloa Hawaiian Immersion School, and the Hui Malama O Pupukea-Waimea marine life conservation group.
