North Devon surf shop making waves on climate change
by Howard Swanwick
08/03/2007:// Loose Fit Surf Shop in North Devon, UK, has been making waves on climate change, with the success of their Surf & Trees Campaign, which has resulted in hundreds of trees being planted in an effort to reduce the growing threat posed by carbon dioxide emissions.
The campaign, launched in March 2006, sees Loose Fit plant a tree for every surfboard that they sell. The trees that have so far been planted will result in over 200 tones of carbon dioxide being absorbed, gaining Loose-Fit the 'Carbon Zero' stamp.
Scott Burrows, Loose-Fit Environmental & Retail Manager said: "The scheme is working really well and it is proving to be very popular with our customers. There is a strong link between surfers and the environment, and we look forward to planting many more trees and expanding our new 'Loose Fit Woodland' that has been created thanks to the campaign".
Thanks to the Surf & Trees Campaign, Loose Fit is now classed as a 'Carbon Zero' company, which means that all the carbon dioxide that the company produces, such as heating and lighting as well as the shipping of their products is offset through the trees that have been planted, which Scott Burrows thinks may be a world's first for a surf shop:
"We think it is really important to take responsibility for the impact that you have on the environment, and that is why we have gone Carbon Zero, and we may well be the worlds first Carbon Zero surf shop".
