05/03/2007:// Plymouth University put on a textbook display of competition surfing to win the BUSA team title for the sixth time in seven years in Cornwall.
The Devon squad's victory was sealed when the team took the top three places in the men's final at Newquay's Fistral Beach.
In contestable 3-4ft waves, Plymouth's Ludovic Henry was the stand-out with some big snaps on the vertical wave faces giving him the overall men's title.
Team-mate Luke Parkhouse finished in the runners-up spot ahead of defending champion Matt Le Maitre, from Guernsey, who was one of the pre-contest favourites for the individual titles.
Luke Haverman's fourth place finish in the final helped Aberdeen into second place in the team event with Swansea Institute in third.
More that 400 surfers from universities across Britain competed at the event which has been running since the early 80s.
In the women's section, Swansea's Jo Dennison was crowned champion for the second year running ahead of Cambridge Uni's Sarah Street, Bethan Cara-Price, from Swansea and Ulster's Shauna Ward.
The women's team title went to the University of the West of England. Runners-up were Swansea University with University College Falmouth third in their first year of competing at the event.
Phil Attwell, chairman of the British Universities Students Association, which organises the event, explained why the surfers are willing to travel so far: "For many it is their only chance to take part in a competitive event. Some students only start surfing when they join their university team in October and they then spend the next six months focusing on taking part in this contest.
"I also want to thank the British Surfing Association for running this event for us, because they always do an amazing job," he added.
