04/03/2007:// Defending champion Matt le Maitre is hoping to write a new chapter in his career after making it into the final stages of the British Universities surfing championships in Cornwall.

Le Maitre is a member of the highly-rated Plymouth University squad who are also aiming to regain the overall team title at Fistral Beach, in Newquay.

The Guernsey island number one made sure of a third round berth with two powerful high-scoring rides in round two to further his progress in the competition.

More than 70 teams representing universities from across Great Britain have entered the contest which has been staged since the early 1980's

In the region of 435 surfers started the contest vying to pick up points for their faculties as well as clinching the overall division titles.

In recent years, Exeter and Plymouth uni's have dominated the event, but under the captaincy of Lucas Flumm, the newly-formed Falmouth team are aiming to make its mark.

Other stand-outs so far in the competion have been Swansea's Tom Case and Christian Swanson.

In the women's section, defending champion Shauna Ward, from Ulster, set out her intentions with an unbeatable first round victory.

Welsh champion Jo Dennison also impressed with the high-wave score of the day to also make the second round of the draw.

The British Surfing Association event is being sponsored by Brittany Ferries and Gul International.
