13/03/2005:// Cornish teacher Kay Holt has returned to Asia to help a surf community devastated by the Boxing Day Tsunami.
The current English women's surfing champion, is in Arugam Bay, on Sri Lanka's east coast - which was hit by a 40 foot tidal wave.
Holt, who won the BPSA Champion of Champions title at A-Bay in June last year, has gone back to the area which is slowly being rebuilt.
Newquay's Alan Stokes may visit the resort in April as part of a BPSA trip to see if this year's event can be staged.
More than 500 people lost their lives and over 1,000 remain homeless and are living in tents.
Ralph Pereira, from TTaL, helped stage the first professional surfing contest along with the Newquay-based British Professional Surfing Association.
"There is no power or telephone service. The fishing community is down to 1,500 people. The rest are dead or displaced," he said.
"The strip of hotels that was on the beach side has all been affected. I've been told there is only one hotel left standing," he added.
The Champion of Champions was the first competition on Sri Lanka's east coast. Up until two years ago it was a stronghold of the Tamil Tigers who were fighting for independence from the Sri Lankan government.
Cornwall's Spencer Hargraves won the final ahead of Llewellyn Whittaker, Micah Lester and British pro champion Sam Lamiroy. Lester himself was caught up in the earthquake himself but is reported safe.
Four Channel Island surfers also competed at A-Bay - Jersey's Scott Eastwood, Sam George, Andy Cummings and James Hick.
A charity surfing calendar has been produced with proceeds from it's sale going directly to projects in A-Bay.
