Stockes captures the BPSA in Newquay by George Mojo

13/03/2005:// British champion Alan Stokes has added the British professional title to impressive title tally.

The Cornish surfer secured top spot on the BPSA tour after making the final of the Gul Newquay Open.

The Animal/Salomon team rider finished third in the final behind Byron Bay's Josh Lewin and Sennen's John Buchorski.

Runners-up spot saw Buchorski climb from 16th place in the rankings to third.

Newquay's Mark Harris ended the season on a high. His fourth place finish in the final secured second spot overall in the series.

Four times British champion Lee Bartlett was pushed back into fourth place after losing to Harris by half a point earlier in the contest.

A reverse air won Oli Adams the Freerange Best Air Award.

Cornish teacher Kay Holt took the women's BPSA title.

Other awards went Matt Capel, from South Devon, as the most up-and-coming surfer of the year; U18 British girl's champion Beth Mason won the women's Rookie of the Year; the Most Inspirational Surfer of the Year went to 50-year-old Jed Stone; while former Plymouth University Surf Club captain Sam Lamiroy was voted the best BPSA surfer in a readers poll at Wavelength Magazine.

Contest Director Dave Reed told BBC Guernsey the season had been one of the best ever: "One of the many highlights were the waves at Thurso East in Scotland, the waves were world class. In fact every venue had it's own special feel.

"The focus in the New Year will be the 2005 tour and our speciality event at Arugam Bay, in Sri Lanka."
