British junior squad face climbing wall at Newquay Sports Centre
by George Mojo
17/01/2007:// The British junior surf squad will reach new heights this weekend in their preparation for the World Junior Surfing Games, as they face the climbing wall at Newquay Sports Centre.
It’s all part of the rigorous programme put together by GB coaching and management team, to prepare the team for the world championships, to be held next May in Portugal.
‘The climbing wall is a test of their mental strength as well as their physical strength, and will also contribute to team bonding,’ says the head coach Tyson Greenway. ‘They’re all very competitive, and the urge to outdo each other is great for motivation and morale among the team.’
The session has been put together by the BSA in partnership with the EBO Adventure Centre Hoping to build on the unprecedented individual and team successes of British surfers on the world stage last year, the junior squad is benefiting from advanced fitness, physiological and psychological pre-contest preparation during monthly training camps.
In February the squad is due to travel to Taghazout, Morocco, for a week’s technical coaching in warmer and more consistent conditions than they are likely to find at Fistral this weekend.
Meanwhile, with their sights fixed firmly on the summit of the World Games in Portugal, the junior squad, selected from throughout Britain, will converge on Newquay on Friday, to face the challenge of the Newquay Sports Centre’ climbing wall, before a weekend of surfing and classroom sessions with the BSA’s elite coaching team.
