News Brits aim for Masters glory

[Newquay's Jed Stone]

Six to represent Uk in Puerto Rico by George Mojo

03/01/2007:// Five Cornish and one Yorkshire surfer will represent Britain at the ISA World Masters Championships in Puerto Rico.

This event takes place from January 20th to 27th at the famed reef in Rincon.

Hosted by the Puerto Rico Surfing Federation, the Championship will feature surfers from over 15 countries including Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Great Britain, Italy, Jamaica, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Sweden, Tahiti and Venezuela.

It will determine the world's top surfing nations and award individual titles to the world's top Masters surfers.

This Masters Competition is dedicated to surfers over the age of 35 who are bringing a wealth of experience and agility to this inaugural event.

Britain have a very strong team of six - who have at least 57 British, English & European Championship titles between them, both past and present, across all the age categories of their amazing surfing careers.

This does not include the many other competitions such as the Cornish & Open titles that they have also gained and hopes are high of lifting the title for the first time in more than 40 years.

The Great Britain team is as follows:

Kahunas (over 45)

Jed Stone (Newquay)

Gary Rogers (Saltburn)

Grandmasters(over 40)

Roger Knight (Newquay)

Daz Wright (Newquay)

Masters(over 35)

Grishka Roberts (Newquay)

Lee Bartlett (Newquay)
