Newquay's Winter is top placed Brit at 2006 end
by George Mojo
24/12/2006:// Newquay's Russell Winter was the top placed Briton on the World Qualifying Series pro tour at the end of the 2006 season.
Winter finished in 37th place in the rankings with 7,097 ASP points, more than 4,000 adrift of overall tour champion Frenchman Jeremy Flores.
Victory at the O'Neill Highland Pro in Scotland at the start of the season was one of the big highlights for Winter, who did not make the cut for the WCT circuit for 2007.
The 31-year-old, who is expected to defend his Thurso title this Spring, was the only Briton inside the tour's top 100.
A keen golfer and fisherman, Winter has been one of the most high-profile competitors in recent years. Injury forced him out of the WCT but since then the "Bulldog" has tasted victory in the Maldives and at one of his favourites waves, Soup Bowls in Barbados.
The regular foot is also a past English and British champion and won the Rip Curl Newquay Boardmasters at his local break in Fistral Beach in 2002.
His sponsors include Reef clothing and footwear, Cornish-based Gul wetsuits, Kahuna, Balin, Oakey, Pukas and Kiamoters.
There were no other British surfers inside the tour's top 100 which was dominated by Australian and Brazilian entries.
The 2007 WQS season starts on January 5th with the 4star O'Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro in Florida, before moving to Pipeline in Hawaii for the Monster Energy Pro.
The first British leg of the tour takes place between April 24 to May 1 in Scotland with the 5star Board Masters being staged between August 7th and 12th.
The British team has now set off for the World Surfing Games and things became a little nerve-racking before departure due to a last minute personal situation which meant that their invaluable team manager had to pull out
